ABOUT INTERACTION
InterAction is the largest U.S. based coalition of international nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) with Members working around the world in low- and middle-income countries, fragile and post-conflict states, and emerging/growth economies. Member organizations are large and small, secular and faith-based, with a focus on people living in the world’s most poor and vulnerable places. The U.S. public, foundations, and governments support the work of our member NGOs that collectively invest and manage more than $15.4 billion a year. InterAction revenues come from dues, government grants, corporate partners, fee for service and private foundations. Using its collective voice and convening power, InterAction seeks to shape important policy decisions and actions across a wide range of issues – including foreign assistance, humanitarian relief, social and economic development, and effective, accountable governance – that advance human dignity and human potential.
Position Description
Are you passionate about racial and ethnic diversity and accelerating the path for emerging leaders? Do you have technical expertise on issues of diversity and inclusion in nonprofit organizations? Do you have a background of working with nongovernmental organizations on international relief and development, or demonstrated experience managing a fellowship program or leadership training? InterAction is seeking an experienced and entrepreneurial team member to serve as a project lead for the creation of a new program that would draw on these passions and skills.
InterAction seeks to advance practical aspects of increasing diversity and inclusion in leadership of the international non-profit sector. In line with increased recognition of the need for greater diversity among NGO leaders, a successful candidate in this role will design, raise funds for and create InterAction’s “Increasing Diversity while Advancing Emerging NGO Leaders” Program. A key anticipated result will be a new, selective fellowship promoting more racial and ethnic diversity among recognized emerging leaders working for international NGOs based in the U.S.
This position will reside within InterAction’s division of Global Development Policy and Learning and report to the Vice President for Development Policy, Advocacy and Learning. To be successful, the incumbent must be a problem-solver, project manager, fundraiser, and active proponent of practical steps toward greater diversity and inclusion.
Scope
Guided by principles of inclusion and equity, this position will help establish a program that promotes diversity among the next generation of nonprofit leaders focused on international development, democracy, global health, humanitarian action and human rights.
This position is supported by a planning grant and designed to lead in the building of something new. Since the successful launch of a fellowship program will be contingent on the development of additional financial resources and programmatic partners, this position is structured as a full-time term employee for an initial term of one year. The incumbent, given their expertise and skillset, will also provide support to InterAction’s other diversity and inclusion work.
Key Responsibilities
Key responsibilities for this position include:
Building upon and developing further research (including, for example, focus groups) on the best program to achieve InterAction’s goals for the fellowship program.
Developing and managing an implementation plan for the program (teeing up decisions across many areas of consideration for a new, selective fellowship program focused on increasing racial and ethnic diversity among emerging NGO leaders).
Fundraising (identify, research, and meet with potential sources of financing and secure adequate grant fundraising to launch the program).
Program development (identify, research, and meet with potential partners and forge new partnerships).
Marketing and promotion of the program (working with internal and external stakeholders).
Building application and selection processes that ensure a diverse candidate pool and selection.
Liaising with other coalitions and organizations working closely on diversity, equity and inclusion.
Provide support, where relevant, to InterAction’s other diversity and inclusion work, including working alongside Human Resources staff and any other teams and consultants on internally-facing efforts.
Supporting InterAction teams and initiatives as needed, performing other related duties as assigned by the Vice President for Development Policy, Advocacy and Learning.
Qualifications Required:
At least 5 years of experience with program/project design and planning, preferably this experience will include work with underrepresented and/or disadvantaged groups.
At least 3 years of experience connected to career counseling, workforce development, or coordinating or managing a fellowship program or organizational training and mentoring programs.
Professional experience or a strong demonstrated interest in promoting inclusion and improving diversity.
Strong analytic and planning abilities and ability to give high-level strategic input on and drive proposal development, project design and program scale up.
Experience cultivating professional programmatic partnerships.
Experience with fundraising from foundations or other donors, and business development.
Excellent self-direction and the ability to take ownership and drive responsibilities through to completion.
Excellent written, oral communication and presentation skills.
People oriented, with demonstrated evidence of highly collaborative communication skills, and strong inter-personal skills. Ability to communicate empathetically and transparently with individuals from varied backgrounds, as well as experience in communicating clearly in high-pressure situations.
Strong organizational skills. Able to effectively manage data and keep track of varied information with ease and efficiency. Able to communicate information clearly to all relevant stakeholders.
Ability to work well and contribute effectively under pressure and in response to rapidly changing needs.
Bachelor’s degree.
Qualifications Highly Valued:
- Professional experience guiding fellowship programs.
