Members operate in every developing country and advocate for global change to overcome poverty, exclusion, and suffering by advancing social justice and basic dignity for all. Located in Washington, D.C., InterAction aims to give each of its Members the collective power to speak and act on issues of common concern.

InterAction’s Communications Team is seeking applications for a full-time remote internship position for Fall 2020.

A stipend of $1000 will be provided to full-time interns completing the internship (pro-rated for part-time) along with class credits and a robust professional development program which includes workshops, trainings, and educational opportunities. We anticipate the internship lasting from September through mid-December with flexible start and end dates.

Primary Responsibilities

The Communications intern will gain valuable insight into branding, marketing, and external communications in a non-profit environment by working directly with the Communications Team. Overall responsibilities will focus on assisting with drafting content, including social media posts and blogs, and helping streamline or improve current Communications processes. Interns will be encouraged to participate in planning meetings and contribute their ideas.

Additional responsibilities may include:

  • Developing content for all InterAction social media accounts, including Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter;**
  • Writing for the InterAction blog;**
  • Helping build out new Communications resources in the InterAction Intranet;**
  • Tracking, recording, and logging InterAction media clips;**
  • Helping plan and implement social media campaigns that inform and influence how people think about pivotal issues like COVID-19 and global health;**
  • Researching trends in the design and marketing fields.**

  • Gain experience working in a professional, collaborative team environment;**
  • Develop research, analytical, communication, writing, and task/time management skills.**

Additional Opportunities:

  • Attendance at InterAction working group meetings – access to meetings of Members and InterAction staff on a variety of current issues within the humanitarian assistance field; **
  • On-the-job learning about messaging and branding for a non-profit;**
  • Access to senior-level staff members at InterAction for informational interviews;**
  • Informal networking with InterAction staff members and individuals from Member organizations.**

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s or higher in international relations, international development, communications, public relations, journalism, or another related field;
  • Able to commit to at least 4 days a week of work (32 hours per week), with preference for those who can work full time (40 hours per week);
  • Solid writing, editing, and research skills with strong attention to detail and ability to write quickly and effectively;
  • Strong written and verbal communication ability, including communicating via social media;
  • Editing and proofreading skills, including knowledge of AP style;
  • Interest in and basic understanding of development and humanitarian relief issues;
  • Fluency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.), knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite and graphic design skills a plus;
  • Ability to work independently but also thrive in a team, managing multiple priorities with flexibility and follow-through;
  • Commitment to teamwork, good interpersonal skills, can-do positive attitude, and professional etiquette.

Physical Requirements:
